Resveratrol, a well known stilbenoid compound, could be investigated by medical professionals for activity against COVID-19

I am presenting information as-is, with no assertions whatsoever. Frankly, I suspect it could be useful, and that would be consistent with what I know about it, but it could also possibly be detrimental.

A recent death and serious injury in the US highlights the dangers of people seeking to self-medicate for COVID-19.

Your doctor should be the person you consult.

If you are looking for interventions that are virtually guaranteed to be safe, NAC has a proven track record of use against colds, which are caused by several other coronaviruses, I would look at my article here on N-acetyl-cysteine.

NOTE: I do not know whether RESV it would help at all. These pages are totally speculative and are directed at medical professionals who I am asking to look at them. They are not directed at the general public.

UPDATE: That said, a new piece of information just emerged which is directly relevant to COVID-19. See the link I am about to post.

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol that is produced by a number of genetically diverse plants in response to stress or injury. from the medical literature, it has activity against the two viruses which are most closely related to COVID-19. MERS and perhaps also to SARS, however there the language that is used is ambiguous. We do know, however that substances closely related to resveratrol (actually the term does refer to a family of closely structurally related stilbenes. One of which occurs in the official city tree of the epidemic's birthplace, Wuhan, China, the beautiful Metasequoia, sometimes called the "dawn redwood".)

However, many substances that have in vitro activity against viruses do not prove to work in real life situations.

In animals and humans, Resveratrol powerfully regulates cytokines and other biomarkers of inflammation and this makes it very useful in many human diseases, making it into a substance that is now the subject of a lot of research.

Drug companies are seeking to make related substances that they can patent. they would love to take resveratrol off the market. That's how they work. Even though resveratrol is - and the science is sound, that its very helpful in dozens of illnesses, you will rarely find that being acknowledged outside of the scientific literature.

Other scientific literature does not come out and say that.

Its a complicated situation. See these papers.

One of many reason COVID-19 is so dangerous is the combination of its high communicability, and a particular ability it has to interrupt the signals we need to tell us to breathe.

Recently, an amoebic infection acquired by inhaling water in lakes  Naegleria fowleri has been in the news because it can suddenly infect people. One day they are healthy, but inhale some lake water, the next they are suddenly battling a serious brain infection.

COVID-19 impacts respiration in a similarly dramatic manner because it infects nerves. There is a very substantial need to reduce that aspect of COVID-19 illness.

I have collected links to a very few papers on the neuroinvasive aspect of COVID-19

In contrast, in some situations, resveratrol is neuroprotective.

Of course, it's a completely different situation.

But in a number scenarios, resveratrol prevents nerves from dying, or helps them regenerate.  in spinal disc disease, it promotes axonal regeneration.

I have read again and again that RESV is useful in sepsis but none of those studies investigated its use in COVID-19 cytokine storm.

COVID-19 is so new, and as far as I know there are no animal models of it. Also, as resveratrol is well known and sold globally, although if it helped it might save millions of lives, many companies might feel it cheated them out of profits that were rightfully theirs. That kind of thing is what this site is about, and its more and more common.

Resveratrol has positive effects on the gut, it improves the fecal bacteria in a way that improves the health of the immune system, and it also improves the gut barrier function.

It seems to me that would be very useful in COVID-19 illness. (Keeping LPS from the gut out of the bloodstream would prevent the multi-organ destruction caused by LPS. )

(L-Glutamine may also be helpful)

RESV also preserves BBB (blood brain barrier) integrity, which also might be important for the reasons I gave above.

But it also may not be.

Millions of years of plant evolution has created a lot of very useful substances.

That is how medicine begun.

We now have a system that seems good at some things, but really really bad at others.
